Basics of Garment Construction with Cassie Bryant
March 28 - April 25, 2017
$140 (price includes sewing pattern)
In this five week course, you will sew a classic but infinitely versatile shift dress using a commercial pattern (cost of pattern is included in the price of the course). You should already be comfortable with using your sewing machine and have basic sewing skills to take this class. There will be plenty of opportunity to apply your fashion design instincts through choice of fabric and garment details. You will learn to choose the correct pattern size based on body measurements; how to read and interpret a pattern envelope; and how to prepare your fabric and pattern for cutting. Then, with plenty of guidance, you will follow all the step-by-step instructions in the pattern to complete your garment. In the process, you will learn skills including how to insert an invisible zipper; how to finish seams or attach binding and facings; how to set in a sleeve, and how to sew a neat hem. Throughout the class you will learn loads of tips and tricks that will improve your sewing skills and give your garments a professional look. Count on leaving the class with a great looking wardrobe piece and the confidence to take your sewing and fashion design work to the next level.
Please note that supplies other than the sewing pattern we will be using are not included in the price of the course. You are responsible for bringing your own sewing machine and supplies. Please make sure your sewing machine is in working order, since we do not have machines for rent.
Please read the full description and confirm the dates before signing up for the course. In the event that you must cancel, we accept cancellations up to one week before the start date of the class and you will receive a refund of 70% of the price of the course. After this time, you forfeit the cost of the class.
We do not schedule make‐up classes. If you are aware of conflicting dates, please let us know ahead of time and we can let you know if you will still be able to follow the course even if you have to miss a class.
You will receive an email with further instructions and a list of needed supplies from the teacher before the beginning of the course. The email will be sent to the address associated with your PayPal account.
Cassie fell in love with sewing as a young girl and has carried the passion for stitching throughout her life. As much time as she can get away with she devotes to constructing her own clothes, either adapting commercial patterns or starting with a sketch of her own design. She's a self-described "selfish sewer," (Translation: "Don't come asking me to whip up your Halloween costume!") but will enthusiastically help others develop their sewing skills. She serves on the Board of the Young Designers Sewing Program and volunteers weekly with this non-profit after-school program helping kids learn to design and sew. Cassie is always learning something new about sewing. Currently, her aspirations include classic tailoring, vintage-style men's workwear, and sewing delicate lingerie.
